Canoeing the River

When I mention that I canoed the river, people tend to ask me how it was. In short, it was long, wet, and difficult. I am currently working on writing up the entire trip as one coherent narrative. (I have about 80,000 words in the first draft.)

A number of events happened along the way which have convinced me that it is a worthwhile exercise to do this writeup, even though I never intended to do any such thing when I started on the trip. As part of the writeup, I am attempting to put the events of the canoe trip into perspective of the few years of my life surrounding the event, as well as try to recreate the experience of the trip for the reader, including the technical details as well as the various meditations and introspections I had along the way.

After I finish it I will decide whether or not it is good enough to merit publication or if I should simply store it away for my own personal records.

If you really hunger for a snippet, though, you can read the overture that I wrote for it. (Please note that this is not a representative sample of the final writeup but simply an opening "teaser" much in the same way that a large musical production or opera will start with an overture to introduce many of the themes of the piece and peak the interest of the audience.)
